    Title: Issue No. 31 (January-June 2021)
Abstract: Democracy in Myanmar was challenged this February when the military took over the country in a midnight coup, resulting in widespread protests and global condemnation. While there has been a consensus that it is necessary to stop aiding the military and to support the legitimately elected parliamentarians, Myanmar’s immediate neighbour in the east, India, is stuck between words and deeds. The feature article in this issue of the newsletter contends that while India’s diplomatic statements have called for complete cessation of violence and restoration of democratic norms, its economic interests are harnessed through direct or indirect links with the military.

This issue also looks at other topical developments in South Asia, including Afghanistan’s rocky road ahead, the clash between the Quad and ASEAN, Bangladesh’s success and challenges after 50 years of independence and the recently announced social media rules in India. It also provides updates on all the events and publications completed in the first half of 2021.
