Nepal faces a unique dilemma – that of being situated between two Asian giants, India and China. In October 2020, the Nepali foreign minister, Pradeep Gyawali, said that the government was formulating a new foreign policy with an objective of utilising its unique geographic position for economic development. In the recent times, there have been tensions between India and Nepal, with the latter accusing the former of implementing an economic blockade (something India has not acknowledged). Meanwhile, there is a budding economic relationship between Nepal and China. Going forward, it will be important to watch how Nepal strikes a balance between the two neighbours whilst promoting its own interest.
Apart from this feature story, the newsletter looks at the first year of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa government in Sri Lanka, Pakistan’s budding role as the leader of a new Islamic grouping and India’s economic revival post-COVID-19. It also presents a comprehensive listing and summary of the key events and publications at ISAS.

Issue No. 29 (Jan 2020-Jun 2020)
Abstract:
Bangladesh has witnessed a phenomenal economic transformation in the last 50 years. This has been possible due to the exogenous support in the form of external aid and general market access as well as endogenous endeavours like people's resilience and their entrepreneurial spirit. Its social indices for development such as life expectancy, gender equality, women's empowerment and access to sanitary facilities are better than its South Asian neighbours. Early this year. the COVID-19 pandemic caught the country off-guard, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a stimulus package was quickly announced to get the economy back on track. With so many positives, this is a country worth watching. Apart from this feature story, the newsletter looks at the impact of COVID-19 on the South Asian region, celebrates 50 years of bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Singapore, offers insights into the Maldives and highlights Pakistan's United Nation peacekeeping missions. It also presents the key events and publications at ISAS.
