Introduction
Dr S Narayan retired in 2004 as the Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, after serving as permanent secretary in the ministries of Finance, Revenue, Petroleum and Industry in the Government of India. In a government service career spanning around 40 years, he served in senior positions at the state (Tamil Nadu) government as well as at the national level.
Dr Narayan has a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge in Development Economics, an MBA from the University of Adelaide and an MSc from the University of Madras.
He was a visiting senior research fellow at ISAS from 2005 to 2020, and has contributed a number of insights, articles and papers, both within ISAS and externally. He has single authored two books and edited four books during this period.
Dr Narayan currently shares his time between Chennai and Coimbatore. He is part of the Tamil Nadu state Chief Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, along with Dr Esther Duflo, Dr John Dreze, Dr Raghuram Rajan and Dr Arvind Subramaniam.
