Indo-Sri Lanka Fishing Dispute: Causes, Effects and Solutions

    Chulanee Attanayake

    30 December 2023

The Indo-Sri Lanka fishing dispute, fueled by historical, cultural and maritime boundary issues, has persisted since the 1990s. Despite bilateral discussions and initiatives, unresolved conflicts over poaching, overfishing and illegal methods pose legal, political and security challenges. Both nations must prioritise finding sustainable solutions and consider joint efforts for marine protection, as the protracted issue impacts their bilateral relations and traditional maritime security. In this issue of the South Asia Scan, Chulanee Attanayake underscores the urgency for both countries to find a lasting and sustainable solution, possibly through joint efforts for marine protection.
