Mr Ravi Velloor is Associate Editor & Senior Columnist with The Straits Times, a flagship publication of SPH Media, Southeast Asia’s biggest newspaper group. Prior to this, he was Foreign Editor of the newspaper.
A four-decade veteran of the craft, Mr Velloor’s work focuses on Asian geopolitics, transition and the interplay of business and economics with foreign policy.
Mr Velloor previously worked as Editor, Singapore Region for Bloomberg News, and as South Asia bureau chief for Asiaweek, Time Warner Inc. His career has spanned wire services (UNI, AFP), magazines (Asiaweek, TIME) and business journalism (Bloomberg). He has spent two stints in South Asia – (1984-1993 for Asiaweek and 2005-2011 for The Straits Times), and was a co-founder of the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia.
An award winning journalist, Mr Velloor is a regular podcaster. He also is a frequent speaker and moderator at global forums, including those organised by the World Economic Forum, Jeju Forum, St. Gallen Symposium and Caixin Media. A Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii, United States, he also has published scholarly chapters on values in foreign policy, soft power and the Indo-Pacific in various publications.
He is the author of India Rising: Fresh Hope, New Fears (published 2016), a penetrating account of the decade that led to the rise of Narendra Modi.
Mr Velloor was educated at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore, and Delhi School of Economics, India.
