Humanitarian assistance and Disaster relief have emerged as important missions for major
militaries around the world after the Cold War. The missions that were once largely left to
such organisations as the International Red Cross have now become an important part of the
security agenda of nations with significant military capabilities. The absence of great power
rivalry and conflict after the collapse of the Soviet Union compelled a revaluation of the
objectives of military force after the Cold War.
